Agrasen ki Baoli- Mystical Monument of Delhi
Agrasen ki Baoli or the Rajaon ki Baoli is an important tourist site in Delhi. It is an important historical structure and atrracts a number of tourist because of its architectural brilliance and the haunted stories related to it.
The Agrasen ki Baoli represents the Tughlaq era construction which consists of boulders and big rocks plastered with lime. The initial construction of stepwell dated back to the time of Mahabharata and was constructed by Maharaja Agrasen of that period. The baoli was renovated during the Tughlaq era with the help of Agrawal community and Muslim masons.
The baoli is divided into three stories with windows and rooms built for multi-purpose use. Lately, the baoli was filled with water up to two tales, but now it has been dried up. The western side of the stepwell has a mosque with chaitya inscriptions on the walls and pillars. According to the legends, the stepwell was accessible to the members of all communities and was the most useful well during the medieval times.
The Agrasen ki Baoli is one of the most iconic heritage landmarks of capital. The structure is tucked between the high rises of the Connaught place in the Hailey Lane, near Barakhamba Road. The site was less known lately and got due recognition after featuring in several movies and commercials.
The Agrasen ki Baoli is still under a cloud of Debate over its nature. Based on the legends and some eyewitness accounts, the Baoli is said to be haunted. According to the sayings, the water stored in the baoli was dark and hypnotic and would drive cynical and depressed people to commit suicide. Horrifying tales and accounts of eyewitness’s reveal spotting of spirits during the night. The claim has been challenged and rejected by experts.
The supernatural theory is not yet testified but the little element of doubt always prevails over the truth hidden inside the structure. The Baoli continues to be one of the top most visited sites in Delhi and is very popular among the youths.
